The Devon Works Tread 1
When Devon Works' Tread 1 was released, the haute horlogerie world didn't know what to think. It shares many of the same characteristics as the big modern brands, but it doesn't use any of the same suppliers. Even worse, it's battery powered! Still, this hulking timepiece has won the hearts of the most die-hard collectors, and was even selected as a finalist in the Design and Concept Watch category at the 2010 Geneva Grand Prix... need us remind you that it runs on on the battery. We'll have to see what's going on with this massive, belt-driven machine.
Made by Los Angeles-based Devon Works, the Tread 1 deviates from the norm set by modern haute horlogerie experts; Urwerk, MB&F, etc. people. The biggest difference from these mechanical art suppliers is that the Tread 1 uses an on-board battery system to power the watch. In many ways, however, the Tread 1 embodies the innovative and interactive spirit we expect from contemporary high-end watchmakers. Walking around with the watch on your wrist is an engaging experience, and not as awkward as the first glance might suggest. I was on the Tread 1 for a week, and it didn't take long for my skepticism to give way to childish enjoyment. most. Industrial gadgets on the wrist
The first impression of Tread 1 can range from curiosity and confusion to anger and awe. Most of the time, once. This watch is an impressive figure, with its square shape overpowering all but the most manly wrists. One of my biggest surprises back then was how easy the watch was to wear. The integrated lugs are steeply angled when attached to the rubber strap, providing a comfortable fit on my 7.25-inch wrist. The lug attachment points feature fine detailing, from the brushed finish to the exposed lug nuts. They provide a suitable transition to the stage of activity under the huge sapphire plastic watch glass, with exposed gears, sensors and straps all dancing under the dial, you wouldn't be able to resist calling it if it weren't for the industrial way it does business For elegance. Even a bloated crown,

So the Tread 1 may not be for the faint of heart, but its core function is to tell time. Once you know what you're looking at, fast reading time is a breeze thanks to excellent visibility. This watch can make an equally good desk clock in a modern office setting (need to think about it, Devon?) The watch's exposed moving parts make the Tread 1 a visually striking machine, but it's a great way to tell the time. The clear strap system takes the watch to a level where machines of this skin tone often lose their everyday usability. For example, I find it difficult to read the time on many Richard Mille timepieces. This balance of sophistication and practicality makes the Tread 1 as interesting as the HM4 or UR-110, although it does lack the charm of those pieces due to its electronic internals. This fact shouldn't take anything away from the Tread 1, but the precision and speed with which the watch works gives it a personality of its own that's hugely appealing to those who appreciate well-made gadgets, and that's the Tread 1 Should be seen as - not so much a watch or a timepiece as a gadget, but a really cool thing.

So how does it work?
The Tread 1 uses a patented system of interwoven TimeBelts (of which there are four) to display the time. They are powered by four very small tiny stepper motors that receive power from a single lithium polymer rechargeable battery cell. Technically, the Tread 1 is an impressive machine with lots of high-tech materials and very real space-age engineering. It works accurately and is as strong as a cow thanks to its polycarbonate crystals (at first, Devon Works claimed it was bulletproof, but that seems to have faded).
Battery life is okay, but if you're traveling with the watch, you'll definitely want to bring the charging case. All you have to do, though, is to charge the watch by placing it on the dock in the provided case - no plugging in at all.
Also, Devon Works reminds us that while it's true that this watch is primarily consumed by fans of genuine Swiss-made products, the Tread 1 isn't trying to be a part of the Swiss watch industry. In fact, none of the Tread 1s came from suppliers in the watch industry. Instead, Devon Works uses suppliers from the aviation industry, and each watch is made in the United States of America.

That didn't stop the Tread 1 from being a pre-selection finalist in the "Design and Concept" watch category at the 2010 Geneva Grand Prix, only losing out to the noble MB&F HM4 Thunderbolt which retailed for more than ten times the Tread 1.
Like most watches, like anything in life, the Tread 1 isn't without flaws. The most egregious of these glitches is the sound the watch produces, a byproduct of the multitude of moving parts inside. Once the watch is turned on, the time lines up in a dizzying motion (shown above), eventually set to the correct number, and the seconds band clips off at a rather staggering level of decibels. Unless you turn on your music, or find yourself in a busy environment, you and others around you will notice every second passing by. Thankfully, Devon made a "quiet" mode for this watch, which turns off the seconds band, setting it to zero. Turn on silent mode and you'll just hear every minute passing by, a more bearable experience but lacking the visual pleasure that makes the watch what it is. As seconds go by, you can't wear this watch in a business meeting.

You don't buy a watch like this and say to yourself, "If only it was 38mm..." If you did, I might suggest you're missing the point. However, the rubber strap is a bit wide enough to limit lateral wrist movement a bit. This problem rarely works for me though, maybe I'm not doing enough calisthenics. Gem bearings in TimeBelts peaking I wouldn't say the size of the Tread One is a disadvantage as it's clearly intentional and part of the machine's design, purpose and character. This is a useful service. Many need to rebuild their homes after floods. We restored our house ourselves, but we still need to change the doors, since they are in poor condition.
